The virtuous and chaste Kanakabai observed strict austerity on Fridays in order to obtain wealth as she was suffering from grinding poverty. Pleased with her austerity, Devi Rukmini, the royal consort of Shri Panduranga, blessed her with a lot of gold coins and ornaments.

नैव भृत्या भगवतो व णिजस्ते न संशयः ||

The premises (the devotees who nurture deep love for the Lord) who have, through their premature Bhakti, reached the Lord of Devi Lakshmi, the very embodiment of prey, lead a life on this earth full of love (finding the whole earth lovable). Those who pray to Shri Bhagavan induced by the desire to have riches will not understand this secret. They are not the devotees of Shri Bhagavan. Really they are good businessmen. This stands beyond doubts of any kind

कुर्वन्ति प्रेमभावेन वासुदेवात्मका हि ते ||

एकान्तभक्तिभावेन सर्वत्र समदर्शनः |

वासेदेवः सर्वमिति महात्मानः सुदुर्लुभाः ||

प्रेम्णा प्रेमैव संप्राप्य प्रेम्नस्तुल्यं न विद्यते |

प्रेम्णस्तु विक्रयं कर्तुं नेच्छन्ति प्रेमतत्पराः ||

Shri Sadguru said

Some pray to the Almighty Shri Hari in order to get rid of their sorrows. Some pray to Him to get riches and some with a view to attain divine wisdom. But the great mahatmas who are real gnats, on account of their profound love, develop great devotion which expects no reward. Such great ones, who have such a serene disposition that they find Shri Vasudeva everywhere and in everything due to their unflinching devotion to Him, are very rare to find. Love seeks and deserves to get only love in exchange. Nothing is equal to pure prep. Hence those who who have profound love as their only object, never like to exchange it or sell it for anything in return.

दुःखेन लज्जया चापि हर्षेण प्रणयेन च |

भर्तारं पूजयामास लोकपूज्यं पतिव्रता ||

एवं भागवता लोके दारिद्रयेणापि पीडिताः |

क्षमया प्रनयेनापि दारानानन्दयन्ति ते ||

अजातशत्रवस्ते हि महाभागवतोत्तमः |

आनुकूल्यं हि सर्वत्र किं पुनः स्वगृहे बत ||

Shri Sadguru continued

Having consoled his wife thus smilingly, he took that broken sugar-cane stick in hand and gave it to her. That chaste woman, with great affection and mixed feelings of happiness and sadness, worshipped her husband who deserved the reverence of the whole world. Thus, bhagavatas of this kind make their wives happy with their love and endurance even though they suffer a lot on this earth due to their poverty. The great and virtuous bhagavatas do not entertain enmity of any kind anywhere. When the whole world seems favourable to them what to say about their own homes?

वयं हि बालकाः सर्वे विट्ठलस्य रमापतेः ||

नित्योत्सवः किलास्माकं नित्यश्रीर्नित्यमङ्गलम् |

नित्यं दीपावलिक्ष्चापि कृपयैव रमापतेः ||

यथाभागं कर्तुं हि चकारैवञ्च केलिकाम् |

आवयोः पण्डरीनाथः प्रेम्णैव निजबालयोः ||

Shri Tukaram said

Oh! Devi! What you say is true. I am really a fool as far as family matters are concerned. Yet please give up your anger and excuse me. We are not at all poor in any sense. Are not all of us children of Shri Panduranga, the Lord of Devi Lakshmi? By His grace, we are finding everyday as a Deepavali Day. Every day is a day of celebrations, lasting happiness and prosperity for us. Shri Panduranga is playing thus only in order to make us, His children share this single sugar-cane stick.

Shri Sadguru said

Having spoken thus, in total anger and despair, she beat her husband, the serene and noble master with that sugar cane stick. Even while being beaten like that, her husband remained very calm and smiling. Looking at that, she became very sad and ashamed of herself. Tukaram, the man of endurances, embraced his chaste and modest wife, and consoled her with soothing words.

At that, Kanakabai, the chaste and loving wife of Tukaram, for wild. She started rebuking her husband for behaving like a fool.

Kanakabai said

I am very unfortunate to have a foolish husband like you. I am taking care of you and the children with very great difficulty. But you are not aware of all this and you are always engaged in singing the glory of Shri Panduranga. All the relatives talk low of you. They are making fun of you. You are always engaged in Hari-bhajan, trespassing all the rules of the Shastras and the regulations of normal world. What use is this lone sugar-cane stick to me ? The children are afflicted by terrible hunger.

इक्षुदण्डान् समादाय भक्षयामासुरादरात् ||

गायन्नृत्यन् प्रेमपूर्वं कृत्वा विट्ठलदर्शनम् |

On his way, when he met some bhagavatas, he forgot the sugarcane sticks he had, got out of the cart leaving them behind and reached the sanctum of Shri Vitthala. In the mean time, many children came to the cart, saw the sugarcane sticks and ate them very eagerly. Tukaram was singing and dancing with devotion in the sanctum of Lord Vitthala. After getting the darshan of Lord Vitthala he came back to his cart. Seeing that only one sugarcane stick was left there, he returned home hungry and thirsty. The exalted man described to his wife how he had the darshan of Shri Panduranga and how in the meantime, the children ate away all the sugarcane. He handed over the only remaining stick to her.

तुकारमः क्वचिद्गत्वा दास्यन्चक्रेपि कस्यचित् |

Mahatma Tukaram considered that he was not a person fit enough to gather food stuff in the name of the Lord (by unchavritti) from those who were interested in offering and hence he sought employment with a man. The employer knew the greatness of Tukaram and hence, with true affection, he gave the mahatma some sugarcane sticks. As instructed by his wife, Tukaram got into a cart along with those sticks and moved towards Pandaripuram in order to sell them

Saint Tukaram had a blessed, chaste and good-natured wifee named Kanakabhai. When all the ancestral property was exhausted she was meeting the family expenses selling her jewels one by one. Thought stricken with poverty, she was taking care of her husband and children with endurance and great love. She had very great esteem for Tukaram who was totally lost in Panduranga dhyana, and was beyond all earthly duties and Vedic rituals. Hence, she herself had to bear the burden of household management.

कामाक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं शमयन् क्षमया सदा |

यः करोति निजं धर्मं स योगी शान्तिमाप्नुयात् ||

अतिघोरं तपः कृत्वा विक्ष्वामित्रादयः पुरा |

कामक्रोधसमुद्विग्ना नष्टाः किल मुहुर्मुहुः ||

फलासक्तिं परित्यज्य गृहेप्यतिथिवद्वसन् |

यः करोति निजं कर्म तस्य दुःखं न विद्यते ||

केचिदन्यगृहेष्वेव दृश्यन्ते क्षमयान्विताः |

किन्तु पुत्रकलत्रेषु वर्तन्ते कुपिताः सदा ||

स्वाधीनेषु जनेश्वेव नानादोषयुतेष्वपि |

यः करोति क्षमां शक्ष्वत् समर्थः स हि पण्डितः ||

Shri Sadguru said

Only that yogi who follows the righteous path assigned to him and who controls with the help of endurance all mental disturbances caused by emotions like lust and anger attains peace in the true sense. Long back, great seers like Vishwamitra engaged in severe penance. But they lost poise and calm and were distressed often due to the ebbing emotions of lust and anger. The one who gives up all attachments, lives in his own house as a wayfarers and stranger and carries on his assigned duties, never faces distress. Some people appear to be patient when they are at other places. But at home, they always get angry with their wives and children,. He who deals very patiently even with people who are under his direct control, despite their being full of blemishes, is a real wise man.

भक्तश्रेष्ठं तुकारामं पूजयामासुरादरात् ||

The large-hearted Tukaram threw the book containing his songs into the water of the river Indirayani. In reality, the sadhu Tukaram did not compose those songs motivated by the desire to earn wealth to fame in this world. In fact, those songs were composed by him to propitiate Lord Panduranga, the Sarveshwara and the Lord of the sadhus. Hence Shri Panduranga, the last resort of the bhaktas and the treasure-chest of mercy, retrieved that book from the river and went back to His temple. The next morning, that book containing the songs of Tukaram, was seen seated on the crown of Panduranga. Hearing all that happened, the vaishnavas became very happy and they held Tukaram, the best of the bhaktas, in very high esteem.

सर्वशास्त्रविरुद्धानि गीतान्येतानि पामराः |

Some scholars became envious of Tukaram’s fame. Hence, they started spreading scandals about Tukaram, the mahatma and the devotee of Lord Hari. This man having born in the vaishyl clan and having absolutely no knowledge of the Shastras is composing songs on his own and is singing them. The ignorant people listen to these songs that go against the Shastras and appreciate the malicious Tukaram. When Tukaram, the devotee of Shri Hari happened to listen ti th=se abuses unexpectedly, he was hurt deeply.

भक्तानामात्माकामानां विरक्तानां महात्मनाम् |

न ददाति धनं हन्त श्रियः पतिरपि स्वयम् ||

नानाविधानि गीतानि विधाय स्वयमेव हि |

रात्रौ सङ्कीर्तयामास भक्तानां मण्डलेप्ययम् ||

नित्यं जनाक्ष्च बहवः समागच्छन्ति सादरम् |

तुकारामस्य भक्तस्य श्रोतुं हारिकथाम्रुतम् ||

The completely self renounced Tukaram, the gem among the bhaktas of Lord Vishnu, was contented even while living in poverty and continued singing in praise of Lord Panduranga. What a wonder it is! Even the Lord, the consort of Devi Lakshmi, never gives wealth to the self renounced great ones and others who are His devotees and are desirous of getting Him alone as their wealth. The exalted personality Tukaram used to compose many songs and sing them in the midst of the bhaktas at night time regularly. Many people used to come to him and daily desirous of drinking the nectar of the accounts of Shri Hari narrated by the bhakta, Tukaram.

पत्नीद्वये दुःखितेपि बालकेषु रुदत्सु च |

शिवाजिराजस्तच्छ्रुत्वा दारिद्र्यं तु महात्मनः |

प्रददौ स्वयमागत्य धान्यानि च धनानि च ||

तुकारामो विरक्तो हि भीतभीतो दधाव सः |

अभ्युत्थाय ग्रुहालिन्दाद्विलोक्यैतद्धनं बहु ||

केवलं धनमालोक्य भूतदर्षणभीतवत् |

धावन्तं सान्त्वयामास राजा वैष्णवपुङ्गवम् |

संप्रार्थितोपि बहुधा नैव जग्राह वैष्णवः |

राजा तूष्णीं गृहं प्राप द्रव्याण्यादाय विस्मितः ||

Whenever his two wives and children were in sorrow, he used to preach the glory of the divine sports of Shri Krishna. Hearing of his poverty, King Shivaji brought a lot of grains and wealth to Tukaram along with him. Tukaram, the withdrawn man, was frightened to see those gifts. He jumped down from the verandah of his house and started running. Shivaji pacified the noblest of the vaishnavas who was running away at the very sight of the riches. Against a lot of pleading, he refused to accept them. The king returned to his palace, taking them all back with him

मातृबुद्धिं परस्त्रीषु चक्रे भागवतोत्तमः |

शिरश्च्छेदेपि संप्राप्ते सत्यमेव हि तद्व्रतम् ||

सर्वत्र विट्ठलं ध्यायन् समभावसमन्वितः |

दीनेषु करुणां चक्रे तुकारामो महामनाः ||

धनधान्यादिकं सर्वं दरिद्रेभ्यः प्रदाय सः |

दीनोभवद् गृहस्थोपि नैच्छद्वैष्णवपुङ्गवः |

That bhagavatottama considered the wives of others as mothers. He would never say a lie even if his life was at risk. This was his vow. The generous Tukaram realized the presence of Panduranga everywhere, and was very sympathetic towards the poor. Though he was a householder, he was rid of worries and apprehensions. He became poor as he gave away all the grains and wealth he had to the poor very generously. The exalted vaishnava, Tukaram, spent his family life in poverty as he was not interested in accepting alms from others.

वीणामादाय हस्तेन कीर्तयन् मधुसूदनम् |

वीथ्यां वीथ्यां नृत्यति स्म पदशिञ्चितनूपुरः ||

लौकिकं वैदिकं कर्म न करोति यथाविधि |

He was dancing on the streets of Pandaripuram, with the tinkling anklets on His legs and singing in praise of Lord Madhusoodana with the Veena in his hands. He was oblivious of all the three worlds, always singing melodiously the Divine Names of Lord Vitthala and shedding tears of joy, with all excitement. He did not know to carry on the earthly duties and Vedic rites, He was roaming about like a mad man, always deep in Vitthala dhyana.

Mahatma Namadeva who was so much interested as Hari Kirtan as a miser in amassing wealth, took birth again on this earth even after he had actually attained Vaikuntha. On this earth, he took the form of Swami Tukaram and was developing deep devotion to Lord Pandarinatha.

न साम्राज्यं न च पारमेष्ठ्यं परम् पदम् |

इच्छन्ति भक्तितत्वज्ञा हरिदास्यपरायणाः ||

भक्तितत्वरसज्ञास्तु पुरुशार्थेषु सर्वथा |

लघुबुद्धिं विधायैव याचन्ते भक्तिमुत्तमाम् ||

साक्षाद्वैकुन्ठनाथेपि पण्डरीपुरमागते |

कथं वैकुण्ठमिच्छन्ति तद्भक्ताः कीर्तनप्रियाः ||

Shri Sadguru said

The haridasas who have experienced the sweetness of the nectar of Bhakti never aspire for samrajya, brahmapatta or the paramapada. Those who have relished the sweetness of the nectar of Bhakti, consider the four purusharthas namely, dharma, Martha, Kama and moksha immaterial and seek only Bhakti. How will the devotees of the Lord Vaikuntha who are interested in Nama kirtan, aspire for Vaikuntha, when He Himself has descended at Pandaripuram.

श्रीसद्गुरुरुवाच

एवं संप्रार्थितो विष्णुः समाधाय मनः स्वयम् |

अन्तर्दधे क्रुपासिन्धुरर्चारूपेण संस्थितः ||

नामसङ्कीर्तनेनैव सुलभो भगवान् हरिः |

किमन्यैः साधनैर्लोके कलिकल्मषदूषिते ||

Thus requested by Kabir, Shri Bhagavan controlled Himself and vanished. He presented Himself in the form of the moorti in the temple. Shri Bhagavan, Lord Hari is accessible to those who do Nama kirtan easily. What use the other means have on this earth marred by the ills of Kali?
